Hypertension is almost synonymous with high blood pressure, and in most cases too. But there is still a difference between the two terms.

High blood pressure

The ideal normal blood pressure value falls between 90/60 to 120/80mmHg, which is high blood pressure if the blood pressure is above 140/90mmHg. American Heart Association revised the hypertension standard to 130/80mmHg.

In fact, your blood pressure value is not fixed. During the day, the blood pressure level of a healthy adult changes, which can change due to mood, activity or even diet. Your blood pressure can rise after running, long walking, or climbing stairs, and can lead to the same result if you drink a few cups of coffee or hear bad news. In these cases, your blood pressure is higher than usual, which means that your blood pressure is higher than average. However, occasional high blood pressure does not mean that you have high blood pressure.


High blood pressure is a chronic high blood pressure condition, no matter what you eat or do, your blood pressure is high. That being said, your lifestyle is still a potential culprit. Alcohol and tobacco increase the risk of hypertension. Patients with other chronic diseases, such as Diabetes or Obesity, are also more likely to develop hypertension. Hypertension is also a genetic disease, so if someone in your family has had hypertension, you will be more likely to have it than anyone else who has no history of hypertension.

Blood pressure is between 120/80~140/90 mm Hg, which is a warning signal for hypertension. If you do not take action to lower your blood pressure, you will soon get hypertension. You can reduce your risk of hypertension by changing your lifestyle. If you have a habit of smoking or drinking alcohol, stop them now and try to reduce caffeine and salt intake. If you have other heart disease, ask for the help of a healthcare practitioner and keep it under control. Patients with chronic high blood pressure values need to take antihypertensive drugs to prevent excessive blood pressure.

All in all, a high blood pressure value for a short period of time does not mean that you have hypertension. However, it is recommended that you maintain a healthy lifestyle and consult a doctor regularly to develop the best course of treatment.
